To Our Customers and Taxpayers:
As you are aware, many residents and property owners in Riverstone are dealing with the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey. In particular, the areas in MUD 149 appeared to have suffered the worst effects of the storm.
Although MUD 149 does not own or operate the drainage system or flood protection system, we want to help our customers and taxpayers through the difficult process of recovery. To that end, the Board of Directors of MUD 149 convened on Monday, September 11, 2017, and voted to approve the following:
1) All services, including water, wastewater, garbage, and fire protection, provided by MUD 149 will be free for the month of September 2017; and
2) A formal request for a re-appraisal of affected properties has been submitted to the Fort Bend Central Appraisal District (“CAD”) – this will allow affected properties to pay a prorated 2017 tax bill based on reappraised values.
What does this mean to you?
You have already received your bills for August usage – those fees will remain in place. However, we will not assess any late fees, penalties, or termination on those accounts. If you need time to work through a payment plan for your August bill, we will be happy to work with you to provide additional time. The bill you receive in early October will show $0 for services provided in September. The Board will continually consider whether additional extensions of free service are appropriate, and we will update you accordingly.
MUD 149 has not yet levied taxes for 2017. However, in order to fund budgeted expenses and debt service requirements, the MUD must continue with its 2017 tax levy. MUD 149 will likely levy its 2017 taxes prior to completion of the re-appraisal by the CAD. If that is the case, we will include notices in all tax bills that re-appraised property may be entitled to receive a refund for any prorated discount. We do not know how long the CAD process of re-appraisal will run, but we will do our best to answer any questions you may have regarding your tax bills or the re-appraisal process.
